Doggie life jacket
First, fit your dog with a life jacket. Not all dogs can swim, and even if they can, a new environment and stimuli can cause them to tire or panic, especially if they fall off the boat. Extra floatation will help keep their heads above water and make them more visible to other boaters.
Choose a brightly colored dog PFD that fits properly, doesn’t chafe and has a handle on top so you can hoist them easily aboard. Get them used to wearing the lifejacket on land before putting them on the boat where everything will be new and possibly confusing. Keep an eye on your dog to make sure he or she isn’t overheating in the jacket.
Doggie sustenance
If you’re out for a while on your Lowe boat, remember that your dog needs water to stay hydrated. They may be tempted to drink from the river or lake, but it’s best to give them clean, fresh water so they don’t get sick.
Carry a rigid or inflatable bowl and put it where you won’t step in it or where it could slide around while under way. Guide them to it a few times so they get used to having access to it. Bring doggie treats for training and as a snack.
Doggie comfort
Dogs need to feel safe, and that may mean having a designated place and spotter while you’re running at speed. They should have access to shade, so they don’t get overheated or sunburned and someone to keep them calm if they start getting antsy.
If you can’t lift your dog from the water, have a provision for them to get back aboard. In some cases, a length of carpet will work or opt for a professionally manufactured doggie ladder. Your dog may be excited after some time on the boat, so sporadic swims or shore runs throughout the day might be a great way to burn off energy.
Doggie potty
Another reason to go ashore is for a doggie potty break. They have to go the same as we do, and holding it can cause bladder infections and stress. If you can’t get to shore, provide puppy pads or a square of fake grass and train them to use these with treats and lots of praise. Again, this training may go better if you do it before boarding the boat where there are lots of distractions.
Always keep your mind on safety to protect your best furry friend. Take the time to train them and think through the issues from their perspective. There’s nothing in life like seeing pure joy on a dog’s face, so it’ll be rewarding for both of you.
