Done With Rotted Transoms? How To Choose a Wood-Free Aluminum Fishing Boat.

How To Choose a Wood-Free Aluminum Fishing Boat.

If you've ever pulled a motor off a soft transom, you know the feeling: a repair bill, a lost season, and the nagging question of what else is rotting where you can't see it. The way to avoid doing it again is simple. Buy a boat built without wood in the places that matter.

That's how we build a lot of our boats. The Lowe Stinger 175C is wood-free, all-aluminum, and all-welded. Our Roughneck 2070 Tiller and Roughneck 1860 Tiller pair wood-free hulls with aluminum transoms. Here's what to look for, where other boats can surprise you, and which Lowe fits the way you fish.

Why Transoms Rot in the First Place

The transom is the back wall of the boat where the outboard hangs. It takes the motor's weight and thrust, plus every wave and hard launch. On many older boats, a plywood core inside the transom provided the stiffness, sealed behind an aluminum or fiberglass skin.

The trouble starts with holes. Motor-mounting bolts, transducer screws, drain fittings, and accessory mounts all pierce that skin, and when the sealant breaks down, water gets in.

Trapped inside, the wood stays wet and rots from the inside out, often long before you see anything. By the time you notice flex around the motor, soft spots, or cracks near the mounting bolts, the damage is usually serious.Take the wood out of the transom, and you take rot out of the equation.

"Aluminum" Doesn't Always Mean Wood-Free

Here's where buyers get caught. An aluminum hull can still hide plywood in the transom core, floor, casting decks, storage compartments, or seat bases. The hull won't rot, but those parts can.

So when you're shopping any aluminum boat, ours included, ask two questions:

  1. What is the transom made of, including its core and reinforcement?
  2. Does any other part of the boat contain wood, such as the floor, decks, storage boxes, seat bases, or furnishings?

A good dealer will answer both in writing. Construction can change from one model year to the next, so make sure the answer matches the exact boat, year, and package you're buying.

For Bass and Multispecies Anglers: The Stinger 175C

If you fish bass or multispecies, start with the Stinger 175C. It's wood-free, all-aluminum, and all-welded, built so there's nothing back there to rot.

It's also built to fish. The 39-square-foot bow casting deck gives you room to work a shoreline, there's dedicated rod storage to keep tackle organized, and livewells at both the bow and stern keep your catch healthy through a long day.

Shopping used? Our 2021 Mod-V catalog shows a wood-free welded transom on our bass boats from that generation, too.

For open, go-anywhere tillers: the Roughneck 2070 and 1860

If you want an open cockpit and tiller steering, look at the Roughneck 2070 Tiller and the Roughneck 1860 Tiller. Both have wood-free hulls and aluminum transoms, backed by a box-beam transom design for added strength where the motor mounts.

The choice between them comes down to space. The 2070 is longer and wider, with more room for crew, fishing gear, decoys, and whatever else the day calls for. The 1860 is more compact, which makes it easier to store, tow, and launch. Measure your garage, trailer, and tow vehicle before you decide.

Shopping used? Our 2021 Roughneck tillers used no-wood composite transoms, while current models use aluminum. Both are wood-free, just built with different materials, so know which one you're looking at.

Prefer a Steering Wheel? The Roughneck 1660 Side Console

If you'd rather steer from a console, the Roughneck 1660 Side Console gives you a wood-free hull and box-beam transom in a layout built for fishing, hunting, and hard work.

Wood-free isn't maintenance-free

An aluminum transom won't rot, but aluminum still needs some care, mostly to prevent corrosion. The usual trouble spots are where stainless-steel hardware touches aluminum, or where accessories were mounted without the right isolating compound.

A few habits go a long way. Check your motor's sacrificial anodes and replace them when they're worn. Rinse the boat after saltwater or brackish trips. Check the motor-mounting hardware from time to time. And any time you drill for electronics, a transducer, or rod holders, seal the hole properly.

Getting Exactly What You Want

Find a Lowe dealer near you with our dealer finder, and ask for these details in writing for the boat you're considering:

  • Model and year. The exact make, model, and model year.
  • Transom construction. Material, core, and reinforcement.
  • Other materials. Floor, cockpit, casting deck, storage compartments, seat bases, and console.
  • Structure. Supports, ribs, and stringers.
  • Equipment. What's factory-installed and what the dealer added.
  • Sealing. Requirements for motor, drain, transducer, and accessory holes.

Ask for a written out-the-door price that covers the boat, engine, trailer, options, taxes, freight, setup, and fees. If you're financing, you can apply through our financing page, subject to credit approval. Compare the amount financed, APR, term, fees, and total cost, not just the monthly payment, and confirm with your lender whether the motor, trailer, and equipment can be included.

Keep the construction details, care documents, and purchase paperwork with your records. You've already paid for one transom. Your next boat should let you spend your time fishing instead of worrying about what's rotting underneath.
