How to Buy a Boat: A Complete Beginner's Guide

How to Buy a Boat: A Complete Beginner's Guide

There's a moment that happens for almost every new boat owner, somewhere between signing the paperwork and backing down the ramp for the first time, when it hits them: this isn't really a purchase, it's a bet on a life they haven't lived yet. The angler who finally has a boat worth naming. The parent who stops renting pontoons every Fourth of July and just owns one outright. The hunter who no longer needs a buddy with a boat, because now he is the buddy with the boat.

Lowe's spent 55 years building for that exact person, and the one principle that's held steady the whole time is this: the right boat was never really about specs or size. It's about matching the hull to the life you're planning to live in it.

So, before a salesman brings up horsepower, let's start somewhere more useful — with you.

The Short Version

  • Buy for the trip you take 80 percent of the time, not the one you'll take twice a year.
  • When deciding on what size boat to buy, know that 16 to 20 feet is where most first-timers find their sweet spot.
  • The price tag is just the opening chapter — knowing the full ownership picture upfront sets you up to enjoy the whole story.

Now, let’s dive in deeper.

Figure Out What Kind of Boater You Are

Every boat on the lot is built with a purpose in mind. A hull built to fish shallow marsh water shines at exactly that, even if it's not the one you'd pick to haul eight people and a cooler to a sandbar. A pontoon built for lounging is a champion at exactly that, even if it's not built for flipping a jig into a stump field. Knowing what each is great at is how you find your match.

So, before you even glance at a specific model, look at your own calendar first. What does most of your year on the water look like — not the one epic trip you're dreaming about, but the ordinary Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings that'll make up 80 percent of your time in the boat?

If you fish more than you swim, build around that. If family comes first, build around that instead. The boat that wins the decision is the one that matches your real life, not your highlight reel.

Bigger Isn't Always Better — It's Just Bigger

Ask ten first-time buyers what size boat they should get, and eight will answer "as big as I can afford." It's a natural instinct, but there's a smarter way to think about it.

Most first-timers do best somewhere in the 16- to 20-foot range — a size that tows easily, launches easily, and keeps every outing feeling simple and fun.

16 to 18 feet covers most mod-V and utility boats, the kind that slide behind a regular SUV without complaint. 18 to 22 feet is pontoon territory, where the extra length buys you room for the whole crew.

The real win isn't the biggest boat you can buy — it's the right-sized boat that gets used constantly, tows effortlessly, and fits comfortably into your life, garage included.

Check Your Truck Before You Ask the Dealer

Here's a simple step that saves first-time buyers a lot of extra legwork down the road: confirm what your vehicle can tow before you fall in love with a specific boat.

The number on the boat's spec sheet is a great starting point, but the full picture includes a bit more. Add the trailer. Add a full tank of gas. Add the trolling motor, the batteries, the tackle boxes, the cooler, and the second cooler your brother-in-law always insists on bringing. That "lightweight" 18-footer adds up in ways that are easy to overlook at first glance.

Check your tow rating first. Shop for the boat second. It's a quick step that makes everything after it go smoothly.

The Paperwork Side of Things (It's Easier Than It Sounds)

Every new owner eventually reaches this stage — the point where owning a boat comes with a little bit of easy homework attached. Good news: none of it takes more than an afternoon, and it's the last stretch between you and the ramp.

Depending on your state, you'll want to get a few things squared away:

  • Registering and titling the boat, which works a lot like registering a car
  • A boater education course, often just a short online class if you were born after a certain year
  • Marine insurance, which most lenders require and most owners end up glad to have anyway
  • The basic boating safety gear — life jackets, a fire extinguisher, a few flares, and dock lines

None of this takes long, and most of it only needs to happen once. Think of it less like red tape and more like the last few easy steps standing between you and the water.

What Owning a Boat Really Costs (Beyond the Price Tag)

The number on the price tag is just the opening line of a great story. Owning a boat, like owning anything you love, comes with a little upkeep along the way — and the good news is, all of it is simple, predictable, and easy to plan for.

A few things worth thinking through before you buy:

  • Where it'll live. Garage, driveway, or a slip at the marina — it doesn't matter which, as long as you've got a plan.
  • Basic upkeep. An oil change here, a winterization there, maybe a new battery every few seasons. Routine stuff, the same as any vehicle you depend on and enjoy.
  • A little peace of mind. Insurance isn't required everywhere, but most owners find it's an easy way to boat with total confidence, no matter what the day brings.
  • And fuel — which is more about smart habits than cost. This is where every good boater eventually learns the 1/3 Rule: a third of your tank getting out, a third getting back, and a third left in reserve. That last third is what lets you relax and stay out a little longer whenever the day is going well.

None of this is complicated, and it becomes second nature fast. It's simply the practical side of ownership — the kind of thing that clicks into place after your first season and barely crosses your mind after that.

Compare Categories Before You Compare Models

Model names blur together fast once you start browsing. Save yourself some time by narrowing things down at the category level first.

Ask yourself the simple questions: Do I want space for a crowd, or room for my tackle? Am I chasing calm water or rough chop? Is this a fishing boat that tolerates family trips, or a family boat that tolerates fishing?

Here Are Lowe Boats Categories to Consider:

Boat Style - 1

Let Your Lifestyle Pick the Layout

Set the spec sheet aside for a second and picture your actual day on the water instead.

If it involves kids, coolers, and lounging on a sandbar, you want a pontoon — wide open, stable, easy to board. Lowe's LF and LS Series were built for exactly that kind of afternoon.

If it involves a rod in your hand more often than a beverage, you want casting decks, rod storage, and a livewell that keeps dinner alive until you're ready. That's where the Stinger, Skorpion, FM, and FS models earn their keep.

If your best days start in camo before sunrise, you need something rugged, shallow, and built to take a beating — territory the Roughneck lineup and Lowe's Jon boats know well.

The hull follows the lifestyle. Not the other way around.

Family Cruising and Comfort

If your ideal day includes family, friends, swimming, lounging, and the occasional fishing stop, prioritize:

  • Comfortable seating
  • Easy boarding
  • Stability for children and pets
  • Open floor space
  • Shade options
  • Storage for bags, towels, water toys, and safety gear

Boat Category to Consider: Fish-and-Cruise Pontoons

Dedicated Fishing

If most trips will begin with rods in the boat and a fishing spot already in mind, look for:

  • Casting decks
  • Livewell(s)
  • Rod and tackle storage
  • Trolling motor compatibility
  • Fishing electronics
  • A layout that provides room to move while casting

Boat Categories to Consider: Mod-V Fishing Boats and Deep-V Fishing and Family Boats

Hunting and Fishing

If the boat needs to move through shallow water, carry gear, and hold up under demanding conditions, prioritize:

  • A shallow draft
  • A rugged hull and finish
  • Open utility space for dogs and gear
  • Storage for hunting and fishing equipment
  • Low-visibility or camouflage options
  • A durable, easy-to-clean interior

Boat Category to Consider: Utility and Hunting Hulls

Walking the Deck

When you finally step onto a boat at the dealership, don't just look at it — use it. Walk the deck like it's already a Saturday morning and the cooler's packed.

Can everyone move around comfortably? Is there a place for every rod, every life jacket, every piece of gear that always seems to multiply? Is there shade for the stretch of afternoon when the sun is at its brightest?

The boats that feel right in the driveway often feel even better three hours into a great afternoon on the water. Walk it like you mean it, and you'll know when it's right.

Never Buy a Boat You Haven't Driven — Or Get It in Writing That You Will

This one's worth doing right, especially once real money is on the line: for example, with any boat in the $5,000-and-up range, a water test before signing is one of the best ways to buy with total confidence. At this price point, a sea trial lets you experience the engine's condition, the drivetrain's character, and how all the systems come together once they're running under load.

Feel how it comes up on plane, and how quickly it gets there. Notice how the steering responds. Listen to the engine at idle and at cruise — it's the best way to get a genuine feel for the boat you're about to own. Watch how the boat sits at rest, and how it handles a little chop, since that's your first real read on hull balance and ride quality.

A showroom floor, a driveway, or a listing photo can't tell you any of that. Only the water can — and it's one of the most enjoyable parts of the buying process.

The exception: buying in winter. If you're shopping in the off-season and a proper sea trial simply isn't possible — frozen lakes, closed marinas, a dealer with the boat shrink-wrapped for storage — you don't have to skip it, just plan for it. Put the contingency in writing. A written agreement that makes the sale contingent on a satisfactory spring test drive, with a clear return or renegotiation clause, gives you the same confidence as an in-person test. It's common practice with private sellers and reputable dealers alike, and a good seller will be glad to work with you on it. Either way, the goal is simple: you get to confirm, on the water, that the boat performs exactly as promised.

The Dealer Matters as Much as the Boat

The sale is day one of a relationship that lasts for years — through warranty claims, parts availability, the "how do I winterize this thing" call in October, and the loaner engine when yours needs a week in the shop. It's worth giving this some real thought during the buying process, because a great dealer relationship is one of the best parts of boat ownership. Industry data backs up what experienced owners already know: a strong, positive dealer relationship tends to stay strong for the long haul. NMMA's own Customer Satisfaction Index data shows just how much that first service experience matters in shaping a loyal, long-term relationship with a dealer.

A good Lowe dealer isn't just moving inventory. They're becoming part of your routine for years — the person who knows your hull, your engine hours, your trailer's quirks, and what "normal" sounds like when your specific boat is running right. That kind of institutional memory is worth more than a few hundred dollars saved by buying from whoever had the lowest sticker price three counties over.

A few great things worth asking about before you commit to a dealer:

  • Ask about service capacity, so you know what to expect. Nearly every dealer offers service, and the best ones are happy to walk you through their typical turnaround time during peak season (May through August, in most of the country), and how they take care of customers regardless of where the boat was purchased.
  • Ask whether their technicians are manufacturer-certified, particularly for anything involving the engine and electrical systems. This becomes especially valuable as boats get larger and more feature-rich, with more sophisticated electronics, trim systems, and drivetrains to enjoy.
  • Ask how long they've held the Lowe franchise, and how long the dealership itself has been in business. Longevity in this industry is a great sign of financial stability and staff retention — both wonderful things when you're building a relationship with the same service team for years to come.
  • Ask if they're a certified dealer and look up their CSI standing if it's available. NMMA-certified dealers are held to documented standards around customer satisfaction tracking, staff training, and post-sale support, and certified dealers consistently post excellent satisfaction scores across sales follow-up, product knowledge, and delivery condition.
  • Ask what happens after the sale, specifically. Do they offer an on-water orientation before you leave the lot? Do they handle winterization and spring commissioning in-house? Do they offer mobile service for anything that can't easily be trailered in? These questions give you a great sense of what the next five years of ownership will feel like.

That relationship is worth just as much as the boat itself — and on a boat priced well above entry level, it's an especially rewarding one to get right from the start.

Last Cast

When buying your first boat, start with the life you want to live on the water — the mornings, the people, the fish, the quiet. Then find the boat built for that life, not the one built for a highlight reel.

Because the best boat was never the fastest one, or the biggest one, or the one with the longest feature list.

It's the one that gets used. Again and again, season after season — until it stops feeling like "the new boat" and starts feeling like just the boat.

That's the one worth buying.
