Plenty of Lowe aluminum fishing boats and Fish & Ski boats live happily behind a standard 7-foot garage door. Whether yours will depends on the complete package on its trailer, not the hull length on the spec sheet. You're fitting a boat, a trailer, an outboard, and whatever sits above the deck, and it has to clear the door on the way in, fit inside once parked, and leave room for the door to open and close over it.
The reliable answer comes from four measurements: the lowest clear height of your fully raised garage door, the highest point of the boat-and-trailer package, the narrowest clear width at the door, and the depth and overhead clearance inside. Most garage-fit problems don't come from the boat being too big. They come from one of these numbers nobody checked.
Here's how to get them right.
Start With the Real Garage-Door Clearance
A 7-foot door gives you a nominal 84-inch opening, but rarely 84 inches of usable clearance. When the door is fully raised, the bottom edge of the top panel, the weather seal, the track brackets, and sometimes the opener hardware or trim hang below the header. Losing an inch or two is common.
Raise the door all the way and measure from the floor to the lowest point the boat could touch at the left side, center, and right side. Use the smallest number. Then measure the narrowest clear width between the jambs, tracks, and any other obstructions. Single doors are typically 8 or 9 feet wide. A 9-foot door usually leaves comfortable side room, while an 8-foot door gives you less room to correct the trailer's path, especially if the approach isn't straight.
Here's how quickly the margin disappears (these numbers are illustrative, not a specific Lowe package). Say your rig stands 80 inches at its highest point. A true 84-inch opening leaves 4 inches on paper. If the raised door edge actually sits at 82 inches, you're down to 2, and that's before driveway slope or trailer angle takes its share.
Can a Fish & Ski Windshield Clear a 7-Foot Door?
It may, but the windshield alone doesn't decide the fit. The Lowe Fish & Ski 1875 has a walk-through windshield that opens for bow access. It is not a fold-down windshield, so don't plan on lowering it for garage clearance unless you've confirmed a different configuration on the exact boat and model year.
A bimini top is available on both the Fish & Ski 1875 and the FM 1875. Its folded height depends on the top, frame, mounting hardware, and the stowage position its manufacturer approves, so measure it that way rather than in a position you've improvised.
Find The Tallest Point on the Complete Package
Everyone thinks about the windshield, but the highest point could just as easily be a folded bimini frame, the outboard cowling in its towing position, a bow-mount trolling motor, a navigation light pole, an antenna, or rod holders. On an 18-foot Deep-V with a folded bimini, for example, don't try to estimate package height from hull length at all.
To get a number you can trust, measure the rig the way it will actually enter:
- Connect the trailer to the tow vehicle if that's how the boat will go in.
- Set the outboard in its normal towing position.
- Secure the bimini as the manufacturer specifies.
- Stow the trolling motor, light pole, antenna, and loose gear.
- Measure from the ground to the highest point.
Write down the configuration next to the measurement: motor position, windshield, bimini, trolling motor, and installed accessories. A height taken with the bimini folded differently or the motor in another position won't tell you whether the boat fits, and those notes let your dealer compare apples to apples.
The Driveway Is Where Most People Get Stung
Height measured on level ground isn't the height that meets your door. As the trailer rolls over the apron, the threshold lip, or a driveway that slopes up into the garage, the whole rig pitches. The bow or stern rises, and anything tall swings closer to the header.
A driveway that slopes up toward the garage tips the bow high right as it passes under the door. Hitch height changes the trailer's angle before you even start. And a turn right before the door means you can't come in straight, so the fenders or the boat's widest point may run closer to one side than your centered math assumed.
Take a few side-view photos of your entrance and note any slope, lip, or turn. If your clearance on paper is only a couple of inches and your driveway isn't flat, have a dealer review the package and the approach before you commit.
Don't Forget the Door Has to Open Over the Boat, Too
This one catches a lot of people. Once the boat is parked, the garage door has to close behind it and open again the next morning, rolling back along its tracks overhead while the opener rail runs down the middle of the garage.
If your bimini frame, windshield, or trolling motor sits under that path, you can clear the doorway fine and still have the door, pull arm, or opener hit the boat. With the rig where you plan to store it, check the lowest point of the open door panels, the opener rail, springs and track hardware, ceiling lights, and any storage racks along the boat's footprint.
Length: Count Everything Ahead of and Behind the Hull
Boat length is the smallest part of the stored length. Our FM 1775 WT, for example, measures 17 feet 9 inches as a boat. Add the trailer tongue and coupler up front and the outboard behind the transom, and the package you're parking is noticeably longer.
Measure from the inside face of the closed door to the back wall, then subtract anything that sticks out, like a workbench, water heater, shelving, or freezer. Then subtract the room you need to walk around the rig and reach your gear. A boat that fits with an inch to spare but traps you away from the tackle shelf doesn't really fit.
Watch the outboard. Depending on its tilt, the lower unit can extend farther behind the boat than you'd think, and the stern has to be fully inside the line where the door comes down. The door's safety sensor will let you know if it isn't.
If depth is tight, look at the swing-tongue trailer options for the FM 1775 WT. The tongue is the front section of the trailer that connects to your tow vehicle, and a swing tongue pivots to the side for storage, which can recover real length. Measure with the tongue in its storage position, and make sure the swung tongue doesn't create a new width problem.
Width: It's Usually the Trailer, Not the Boat
The widest point of a trailered package is often the fenders or wheels, not the hull. Measure the widest point of the whole rig and compare it to the narrowest point of both the doorway and the parking area. Then think about how you'll actually use the space: backing in versus pulling in, whether you can open your vehicle door, and whether you can walk down the side of the boat.
How Much Clearance Should You Allow?
There's no single number that works for every Lowe boat, because hull, trailer, motor, windshield, bimini, and accessory setups vary. But these guidelines will steer you right:
- Several inches of clearance everywhere: Generally workable when the approach is flat and straight, with normal care on move-in day.
- About 2 inches or less at any point: Treat it as a close call and get the exact package dimensions verified.
- A sloped or turning approach: Have the trailer angle and highest point checked before delivery.
- A bimini or windshield under the open door's path: Confirm parked clearance as well as entry clearance.
Don't plan around letting air out of the trailer tires. It affects towing and handling, and it's easy to forget to reinflate before heading to the water. On move-in day, a spotter at the door, slow speed, and a strip of foam pool noodle taped along the header edge are cheap insurance.
Your Garage-Fit Checklist
Before you visit a dealer, gather these:
- Clear door height: The lowest point with the door fully raised.
- Clear door width: The narrowest space between jambs, tracks, and obstructions.
- Interior depth and width: From the closed door to the back wall or first obstruction, and wall to wall where the boat will sit.
- Overhead clearance inside: Open door panels, opener rail, springs, lights, and racks along the boat's footprint.
- Approach photos: Side views showing any slope, lip, turn, or uneven pavement.
- Hitch height: For the tow vehicle that will move the boat.
- Parking method: Coupled to the vehicle, or uncoupled on the tongue jack or a trailer dolly.
- Boat configuration: Windshield, bimini, motor, trolling motor, lights, and accessories you're considering.
Bring Your Numbers to a Lowe Dealer
Your dealer can give you dimensions for the specific boat, motor, trailer, top, and options you're considering, and that's the key, because the same model can land at different heights and lengths depending on how it's rigged. Ask for two sets of numbers: the complete package moving through the door, and the complete package parked inside, with the outboard, windshield, bimini, and trolling motor positions confirmed for each.
If your numbers are close, ask whether a fit check at your home can be arranged before you sign. Sorting this out while you're still choosing is much easier than after, because you can still pick a different trailer, tongue, top, or motor setup to make the whole package work for your garage.
Measure first, choose the right setup, and your Lowe will be sitting ready every time the fish are biting.
